Ye Harte & Garter Hotel (four stars)

Recommended by Condé Nast Johansens
The Harte and Garter is on the High Street in the centre of Windsor. In fact you cannot get closer to the Castle without actually going inside. The location makes this hotel very sought after, as do the luxury rooms with great views from the top floors into the castle itself. This windsor hotel sits on a site with a long history of providing hospitality. Next time you read Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, you will notice a reference to the ‘Garter Inn’. The Harte & Garter Hotel stands on the very same spot where the old inn which Shakespeare mentioned once stood. Recently modernised inside it now stands as one of Windsor’s hippest luxury hotels.

The Castle Hotel (four stars)
The Mercure Castle Hotel sits on the High Street, close to the entrance to Windsor Castle and is for many people the first choice when it comes to Windsor Accommodation. Recently revamped, it is one of the real luxury hotels in Windsor. The Castle Hotel boasts more than 100 en-suite bedrooms, excellent facilities and a very decent restaurant. Highly Recommended.

Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel (four stars)
The Sir Christopher Wren is right next to Eton bridge in the heart of Windsor and dates back to the 1600s. The Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel is now a top class Windsor destination with high standards of accomodation and service. The bar is particularly good with a well stocked selection of single malts. The excellent Strok’s restaurant is attached to the hotel and features a lovely riverside terrace. If you are looking for a good hotel in Windsor by the river with bags of charm then this may well be the choice for you.

The Christopher Hotel (three stars)
The Christopher on Eton High Street, just a 2 minute walk from Windsor Castle is another very charming old building, with with an excellent restaurant and reputation for first class service. We particularly like the atmosphere of their oak-paneled bar. It has become a favourite meeting place when friends are in town.

Royal Berkshire Ramada Plaza (four stars)
The Royal Berkshire Hotel is a lovely 18th-century red brick Queen Anne mansion set in 15 acres of landscaped grounds. The Royal Berkshire is a lovely hotel for the more discerning visitor. This hotel is in Ascot, about five miles from Windsor. The drive between the two takes you through the beautiful landscape of Windsor Great Park.

Cliveden House (five stars)
Cliveden is an absolutely stunning former country home of the Astor dynasty. The infamous Profumo affair was played out here in the 1960s and staying here recreates the luxurious opulence of days gone by. Celebrity guests often stay at this excellent hotel which has a world class restaurant. Cliveden is positioned in 375 acres of beautifully managed National Trust land on a ridge high above the Thames, affording spectacular views from the terrace. Cliveden House is 9 miles from Windsor town centre.

The Royal Adelaide Hotel (four stars)
Named after one of England’s favourite Queens, this hotel is on Kings Street, close to the Great Park and is noted for its fine Georgian frontage. This hotel is very close to the entrance to Windsor Great Park. Inside the furnishing is refined and genteel. Unlike some other hotels in older buildings, you will find the Royal Adelaide has decent sized rooms.

Beaumont House (four stars)
3 miles from Windsor town centre, Beaumont House near Old Windsor is a conference centre style hotel with 40 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. A good choice for weddings with its lovely authentic Georgian frontage.

Oakley Court Hotel (four stars)
A truly spectacular mock-gothic victorian mansion, built by the river in the 1850s. Oakley Court was used in many ‘Hammer House of Horror’ films in the 1960s. This hotel is about three miles upstream from Windsor town centre. Oakley Court boasts a well equipped gym and a small but enjoyable golf course. A real delight in summer is the riverside garden and the fact that they hire out boats to residents. So next time you want to stay in a Windsor Hotel, imagine coming here and then taking your own private launch downstream past the racecourse and mooring up in the middle of Windsor’s entertainment district. Oakley Court Hotel also boast a pool, spa, gym and excellent restaurant. A great choice if you want a bit of privacy.
